Ripping off the Transformers...Oh yeah, we noticed
by: Bighonkin // July 16, 2001
On to an issue that's been burnin my brain for a while now. Actually, it's been bugging me since the Go-Bots. (Sorry, didn't mean to curse so blatantly.) Well, let's start with those OTHER shape changing guys...

<Around the heighth of the G1 Transformers popularity, Leader-1 and his band of shape changing robots hit the Tube to do battle with an evil motorcycle guy and some other baddies. Clearly a Transformers rip-off. At first, you may just say coincidince, but go back and look at what happened. With guys like the Constructicons who formed Devastator and with the later emergence of the Aerial-bots who formed Superion, the Go-rip-off-artists, developed suits to help them merge and form a bigger robot to fight threats like the mindless Zod. Truth be told though, the Go-we-want-to-be-Transformers were all right.

Today there is a more subtle ripping off of our beloved Cybertronian natives. I mean, who didn't think of the Matrix of Leadership when
"The Matrix" first came out. And upon further review, check out some of the acrobatic type maneuvers done in the Matrix and compare them with moves Optimus Prime, Hot Rod, the Dinobots, the Junkyons, and even Kup did in Transformers the Movie...interesting...

And even though they are a clearer throw back to Voltron, (Which in my opinion was incredibly cool) The Power Rangers Zords do reek slightly of Transformers rip offs. No offense to fans of the Rangers. Which included me until the whole "In Space" stuff came about.

Anywho, the point is simple, there is no denying the impact that Transformers had and still have today on the entertainment, toy, and imagination industries. So here's to the Transformers whether they be Autobot or Maximal, Decepticon or Predicon, or a Robot in Disguise. And here's to all of you who keep this site going simply because, like me, your imaginations were captured by those who are more than meets the eye. 'Til all are one!
